Arctic Cycle ..... by Andy Shackleton

See what Travel Writer Dervla Murphy says about Arctic Cycle:

“Reading Arctic Cycle I rejoiced to identify a kindred spirit, someone who travels sensibly, at bicycle speed, giving himself time to absorb the “spirit of the place.”  And someone who appreciates the value of camping wherever the sun goes down.  That is important, the only way to relate to the spirit of the place.  To be alone with a territory, at night, forms a special bond.

I hope your book will be read by very many young people.  It should inspire them to reject the soft option of back packing in a herd.  By following your example, they can gain those rewards of solo travel only available to those who cycle or walk.

All good wishes, and may you soar to the top of the best seller list.

See what Broadcaster Nicholas Owen says about Arctic Cycle:

"I have always had a great yearning to see the wild places of the Earth. If you feel the same, but perhaps don't feel quite ready to leave the comfort of the armchair, Andy Shackleton has been out there, to bring to life a quartet of interesting and endlessly fascinating places: Iceland, the Faroes, Shetland and Orkney Island.

Read, enjoy, shiver - and prepare to be impressed."

What the press says about Arctic Cycle:

The Sunday Telegraph October 8th 2006 ..... by Clover Stroud .....

Just before his 60th birthday, Shackleton made a six-week bicycle trip from the Orkney and Shetland islands to the Faroes and then around Iceland.  This was not his first trip: a couple of years previously he cycled beyond the Arctic Circle in Norway.  Shackleton is a resourceful traveller, unafraid to pitch his tent and camp out alone in the most trying circumstances or carry his bike, held above his head, through flooded rivers.  Sometimes reading more like a stream of consciousness, his writing is full of gentle good humour and there are some wonderfully described sketches of island life, especially his account of Icelandic fishing villages.
